NLP holds public meeting tomorrow
the topics for discussion at a National Liberal Party public meeting on Thursday.
Speakers include NLP leader Mr. Gilbert Darrell MP, chairman Mr. Geoff Parker and candidates Mr. Austin Thomas and Ms Cheryl Pooley.
The meeting gets underway at 8 p.m. in Cathedral Hall on Church Street.
DIVORCEE HARASSED WOMAN ON PHONE CTS A Sandys Parish wife who admitted hurling obcene comments over a telephone at the woman she felt was responsible for breaking up her marriage was fined $100 in Magistrates Court yesterday.
Duty counsel Mr. John Barritt asked Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis to consider all the circumstances surrounding Deborah Elizabeth Durrant's actions.
He said the 39-year-old was experiencing matrimonial difficulties and saw the call as a way of "getting back at the person she felt was responsible'' for them.
The woman in question received the telephone call on February 27 at her place of employment on Front Street in Hamilton.
According to the Police report, other such calls had been placed before. As a result of their inquiries, officers questioned the Pender Road resident, who admitted the offence.
SALTUS TEACHER HIT BY THIEVES CRM Hi-tec thieves left a Saltus Grammar School teacher poorer after a burglary on Sunday night.
The burglars walked off with a 13-inch Panasonic television, a VCR and a compact disc and cassette player. Also stolen was a school computer. Total value of the haul is $500.
In another incident, a would-be thief fled after setting off the alarm at MacWilliams Restaurant.
Damage was caused to an outside door and window in the Monday night incident.
WITNESSES ANSWER POLICE APPEAL CRM Police have praised two youths who answered an appeal to come forward in connection with an alleged rape.
"We would like to publicly thank them for their very quick response,'' said Police spokesman P.c. Gary Venning.
The youths were flagged down by the suspected rape victim, a 14-year-old girl.
They are believed to have had a conversation with the girl and her suspected attacker before leaving.
The girl was alleged to have been raped on the Railway Trail in Sandys early on Sunday.
LECTURER TO SPEAK CON Author and lecturer Dr. Na'im Akbar has been invited to give a speech by a new group promoting young black men.
100 Black Men of Bermuda has arranged for Dr. Akbar to talk at Frog Lane Field on June 4.
The next day there will be a workshop and training seminar entitled "Visions for Blackmen''.
Dr. Akbar has been hailed as a bright example of a new wave of African psychologists.
His work offers solutions to the many problems facing people of African descent.
Among his books are Chains and Images of Psychological Slavery, From Mis-education to Education, and The Community of Self and Visions for Blackmen.
The 100 Black Men of Bermuda aims to boost prospects of young blacks through "positive progressive action''.
It has appealed for sponsorship of $100 from individuals, and $150 from businesses.
FIRE DAMAGES BOAT FIR A fire which damaged a boat behind the Maximart in Southampton on Monday afternoon is being investigated.
Firemen from the Port Royal station went to the scene at about 3.40 p.m. and extinguished the blaze.
