education cuts in the upcoming Budget debate.

Party spokesperson Ms Cheryl Pooley said rather than education, Government should consider cuts in other areas.

Areas targeted for cuts by the NLP included: Transport and travelling of civil servants and Government Ministers that total more than $7 million.

Printing, stationary and advertising expenses that exceed $17 million, with the exception of tourism-related spending.

Professional and special services that cost Government $14 million.

Governor and staff spending over $900,000.

Government workers overtime costs of $9 million.

A wage freeze on civil servants earning more than $75,000 a year.

"We believe that any cuts in education, especially at a time when we are on the threshold to reforming the system, are a step backward and a clear indication that Government is not truly committed to the educational needs of our young people,'' Ms Pooley said.

"The public schools on our Island do not have enough text books, basic writing supplies, decent photocopying and laboratory equipment.

"And more importantly there is not enough pure science classes, academic and technical studies available in duplicity and availability in all of Bermuda's public secondary schools.

"The Education Ministry doesn't need budget cuts, it needs increased investment.'' Ms Pooley also urged the National PTA not to back down on their opposition to the proposed cuts.
