Instead, it called for the whole Island to be turned into a drug-free zone.

The party's stance was spelled out by Opposition Leader Jennifer Smith during her reply to the Throne Speech.

"The Police should be just as quick to clear drug dealers from other areas as they would be to clear them from a drug free zone.

"Home owners, residents and senior citizens have as much right to a drug free environment as our youngest citizens.'' In the Throne Speech, Government announced plans to tackle drug pushers who peddle their killer wares to youngsters.

The new law would throw no-go zones for dealers around schools, sports clubs, youth centres and other places where youngsters gather.

And anyone caught with drugs -- either for personal use or supply -- would face a harsher sentence than the offences would normally attract.

Public Safety Minister Quinton Edness stressed, however, the rest of the Island would not become a safe haven for drug dealers.

Those caught selling to minors outside the zones would still receive stiff sentences, he said.

In the Throne Speech reply, Ms Smith said: "The creation of drug free zones sends the message that there are some areas where the possession and selling of drugs is OK.''
