"We assist the residents with whatever they need,'' said attendant, Mrs.

Pauline Muhammad.

"We bathe, dress and feed them. And if the residents need to be monitored, we take their blood pressure, temperature, pulse and so forth.'' Another full-time attendant, Mrs. Delores DeShields said the aides must also fill out daily flow charts which record the residents' state of mind, inputs and outputs, behaviour and activities.

"The flow sheets allow us to monitor the residents and record their health,'' said Mrs. DeShields.

Mrs. Muhammad, who worked at the Home before it closed down for renovations in October 1991, said the new Home is ideal for the elderly.

"It is bigger, cleaner and more up to date. I really enjoy working at the renovated Home,'' she said. "The staff get on well together and the nurse administrator, Mrs. Simmons, is great.'' Mrs. DeShields agreed: "Mrs. Simmons is pleasant to work with and she helps everything run a little smoother.'' Mrs. DeShields, who trained at the Bermuda College as a geriatric aide, has always been interested in working with the elderly.

"A lot of people don't have time for them. But I love caring for the elderly.

I can relate to them and they make me laugh,'' she said.

"Senior citizens always have interesting stories to tell - you can really learn from them if you listen.''
