The Bermuda National Trust has pointed out that the latest set of plans for the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute at East Broadway do not encroach on the National Trust's Pembroke Hall lands. Plans were altered and encroachment of National Trust land was removed at the request of the Trust.

Incorrect information appeared in a story on Thursday.

Plans to develop the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute on East Broadway go before the Development Applications Board on March 9, during the Royal Visit.

About five objections to the Institute's plans are to be heard, a Planning Department spokesman said yesterday.

Among them is the National Trust, concerned about encroachment on its neighbouring Pembroke Hall property.

Trust director Ms Amanda Outerbridge said that originally a March 2 hearing date was verbally given to the Trust.

When notice of the March 9 hearing was received, environmental chairman Mr.

Timothy Marshall asked the DAB if it could reschedule, so the hearing would not conflict with the Queen's visit, she said.

He was told that was not possible.

"We will be there,'' Ms Outerbridge said of the DAB hearing. "There were a couple of things that I was invited to, and that I imagine other people were, but the Underwater Institute is more important at this point.'' The BUEI, whose board of trustees is chaired by accountant Mr. David Lines, wants to build a high-technology ocean exploration institute, which is expected to be a major attraction for visitors. Its plans have been revised in response to objections.

The Planning Department spokesman said an earlier date was talked about, but no date was confirmed.

"We still have to work,'' on March 9, she said. "Nothing gets shut down for the Royal Visit.'' THIEVES STEAL SIX CEDAR LOGS IN PAGET CRM Strong-arm thieves carried off six heavy cedar logs from a garden in Valley Road, Paget.

The logs are of substantial size according to their owner and would have been difficult to move.

Police have asked anyone who may have seen someone carrying logs in the Valley Road area should call them on 295-0011.

In another incident a motorcycle-riding thief snatched a handbag from a couple on Rosemont Avenue, on Monday evening.

Police Community Relations Officer P.c. Gary Venning said: "A couple were apparently walking along Rosemont Avenue, around 9.30 p.m. when a motorcycle came up alongside them.

"The rider grabbed the handbag containing $280 in cash and traveller's cheques together with other personal items and made off in a southerly direction towards Pitts Bay Road.'' Police are also investigating a break-in at a small variety store on Palmetto Road, where thieves forcibly entered the building on Sunday night, removing $100 in cash and causing extensive damage to a cigarette machine. Officers also attended Richardson's Restaurant shortly before 4.30 a.m. on Tuesday following a report that someone was trying to break in.

A 27-year-old Devonshire man was taken into custody and will be appearing in court in due course.
