giving her emergency first-aid in a patrol car yesterday.

Quick-thinking P.c. Simon Payne was first on the scene when Ms Clarene Butterfield dialled for help for her two-month-old daughter.

The baby, called Kemba, was having difficulty breathing.

The Bermudian officer arrived with two colleagues at Kemba's home in Somerset in the early hours of yesterday.

"I ran to the house and the mother ran out with the baby and gave her to me,''recalled P.c. Payne, Bermuda's only Winter Olympian. "We jumped into the back of the Police car, and I could see because we had the inside light on.

"The baby's tongue was down in the back of her mouth, so I did a finger sweep of her mouth and brought her tongue forward. Then she seemed to pick up.'' The officers met an ambulance on the way to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and handed mother and baby over to the medical team.

Kemba was allowed home, but later yesterday Ms Butterfield took her back to hospital after her condition seemed to worsen.

The baby was spending last night under observation on a children's ward, with her mother. A hospital spokesman said she was in "satisfactory'' condition.
