Parents urged to help kids pick courses

parents and their children, in their last three years of secondary school, to select the appropriate Bermuda Secondary School Certificate (BSSC) courses.

This awareness campaign is being established because many parents find that at the end of their child's secondary education the entrance requirements to the Bermuda College have not been met.

Dr. Joseph Christopher, senior education officer for curriculum, instruction and evaluation said the Ministry has "become increasingly concerned over the number of complaints from parents of students who fail to meet the requirements to enter the Bermuda College''.

When students enter the secondary year three they begin to choose subjects that best suit their aptitude, interest and ability. It is at this point that the guidance counsellor, along with the parents, become important in helping students plan for their educational programme.

The BSSC is a five-year course of study for secondary school students leading to the award of a national certificate. The programme, which was introduced in 1974, aims to provide quality education for all students in their preparation for the workplace or future education. The Bermuda College requires that students have received satisfactory grades in traditional mathematics and English.
