The Corporation of Hamilton are to put down yellow lines on the north side of the road, effective from next Monday, from King Street to the top of Spurling Hill.

Corporation spokesman Roger Sherratt said: "The idea is to keep that section of the road completely clear so traffic can have a clear run at Cavendish Road. We believe it will really help to ease traffic.'' He added that the first row of parking in the Cavendish row car park would be free for one hour to avoid penalising shoppers visiting the premises on the north side of Reid Street East. Sherratt added that reaction to the introduction of a flashing amber light in Hamilton traffic lights -- introduced to try and promote smoother traffic flow -- had been good.

When the amber light is flashing, drivers can go ahead if the crossing is clear, cutting delays at lights.
