Party's tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King.

It will be the fifth annual celebration of the anniversary of Dr. King's birthday and will be held today at St. Paul's A.M.E. Centennial Hall, on Court Street.

Chairperson of the event's organising committee, Sen. Neletha Butterfield said: "This is truly going to be a celebration to remember. It will be a heroes' day and will commemorate our own local heroes by special Drum Major awards, as well as acknowledging the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday.'' Persons receiving the Drum Major awards are, social activist Mr. Hubert "Sparky'' Lightbourne, the Empress Menen Dancers and Mandela Freedom Drummers to their community work, Mr. Donald Evans for sports, the Bermuda Junior Bowling Association for youth development and Miss Patrica Pogson for the arts and culture.

The celebration promises entertainment, dancing, refreshments, autograph signing and a kiddie corner.

Shadow Environment Minister the Rev. Trevor Woolridge will deliver the renowned "I have a dream'' speech.

Events commence at 3 p.m. and end at 6 p.m.

FIRE DAMAGES HOME FOR YOUNG PEOPLE FIR A home for young people in the care of Social Services was slightly damaged by an early morning fire yesterday.

Firefighters arrived at Observatory Cottage about 8.30 a.m. to extinguish a kitchen blaze.

There was no harm to the six residents, nor were any forced out because of the fire. Smoke damage occurred in the living room.

"The facility continues to operate,'' Social Services director Mrs. Louelle Todd said last night. "Authorities believe the fire was an accident.'' CASH STOLEN FROM STORE YESTERDAY CRM Police are investigating a cash snatch from Lines Food & Liquor Mart, Ord Road, Warwick.

Thieves broke in through a second storey window during the early hours yesterday.

Also yesterday there was a break-in at a property in Valley Heights, Devonshire.

The intruder escaped with more than $2,000 after entering by forcing the lock on the front door.

RESTAURANT SHUTTERS IS WOUND UP EAT The failure of Shutters, the multi-storey restaurant which closed down last August, was confirmed in Supreme Court yesterday.

Shutters Ltd., the firm set up to manage the Burnaby Street building, was ordered wound up by Chief Justice the Hon. Mr. Justice Ward.

Mr. Justin Williams, lawyer for the Butterfield Co. Ltd., said his client was a creditor of the restaurant firm. Shutters was unable to pay its debts, he said.

The Chief Justice ordered the winding up of the company. There was no objection.

Shutters Ltd. is owned by Mr. John Roach, his wife Pamela and partner Mr. Tony Duggan. The restaurant, one of the Island's largest, lasted just under a year.

The building, owned by Gosling Brothers, is up for sale at around $4.5 million.

NEW BOAT BEING BUILT FOR HANDICAPPED SLG A trust which enabled 17 handicapped Bermudians to experience the thrill of a sailing ship is building a new boat.

The Jubilee Sailing Trust are building a magnificent square-rigged sailing ship to operate alongside the Lord Nelson .

Lord Nelson II will be built in Portsmouth next to Victory , Admiral Lord Nelson's flagship.

The Jubilee Trust gives both physically disabled and able-bodied people the opportunity to face exhilarating challenges as an integrated team.

A spokesman said: " Lord Nelson has given over 9,000 people the chance to share the challenge of the high seas.

"The building of the new ship will involve a different but equally-shared challenge teams who will work under the guidance of a core group of professional ship builders.'' The construction is expected to start in June 1995, hundreds are expected to participate.

PEMBROKE MAN BEATEN UP AFTER ROW CRM A 35-year-old Pembroke man is nursing cuts on his face after a heated row ended in a punch-up.

He received several stitches at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

Police say the victim had been rowing with another man in Elliott Street shortly after 1.30 a.m. on Wednesday.

"The matter is under investigation,'' said Police spokesman P.c. Gary Venning.

$2,500 STOLEN FROM A WARWICK HOME CRM Up to $2,500 was snatched by thieves from a property near Billy Goat Hill, Warwick.

They broke in on Thursday through some shutters, said Police spokesman P.c.

He added a property in Southcourt Avenue, Paget, was also targeted by thieves.

They made off wtih a $150 game of Super Nintendo after entering through a ground floor window on Wednesday.

FINED, DISQUALIFIED FOR DRUNK DRIVING CTS A 37-year-old Pembroke man was fined $400 after pleading guilty in Magistrates' Court to driving while intoxicated.

Prosecuting Sgt. Rex Osborne told the court that Horace Passley of Railway Terrace was seen by Police reversing his car on Court Street instead of driving forward.

"Officers watched as the car stalled and jerked in the centre of the road,'' Sgt Osborne said.

"They followed him for a while and saw as he failed to stop at four stop signs.'' When Police stopped him, Passley told them that he had only had one drink. A blood test revealed that Passley had 124 milligrams of alcohol in 80 millilitres of blood.

Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis fined Passley $400 and disqualified him from all vehicles for 12 months.

CRASH LEAVES MAN IN INTENSIVE CARE AC A 77-year-old motorcyclist is under intensive care after a road smash in Devonshire.

The man, of Devon Spring Road, Devonshire, received head and face injuries.

His condition at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital was unknown yesterday afternoon.

The man's bike collided with a car driven by a 74-year-old woman, from Berry Hill Close, Paget.

She was unhurt in the accident which occurred at about 10 a.m. yesterday.

Police say the man was riding east along Middle Road. The car was travelling north on Tee Street.

"Both vehicles were damaged,'' said Police spokeswoman Sgt. Roseanda Jones.
