A man accused of abducting his own daughter after arming himself with a machete was in a Police cell this morning after a two-day manhunt.

The 30-year-old from Paget was finally arrested during a swoop by detectives and uniformed officers near his home early yesterday morning.

He is now being held at Somerset Police station and is due to appear in Magistrates' Court next week.

The suspect had been on the run since 11 a.m. on Wednesday, when he allegedly stormed into his child's grandmother's house in Somerset, wielding a machete.

The woman told Police the man snatched his two-year-old daughter out of her bed and drove off on a motorcycle.

She also claimed she had a restraining order preventing the man from calling at her house.

The toddler was found unharmed five hours later, after the man stopped at his own grandmother's house in Paget.

She told him the Police were already chasing him and persuaded him to hand over his daughter.

The young girl was later taken to her mother's house on Spring Benny Road, Sandys and a hospital check-up revealed she had not been hurt.

Scores of officers from three Police units continued the hunt for the girl's father and they finally caught up with him in a dawn raid yesterday.

The officers -- from Child and Juvenile Services, Uniform and Western CID -- gathered intelligence and were told the man had been spotted on Thursday afternoon.

They swooped in the early hours of the yesterday morning and arrested the suspect after a short chase.

Acting Chief. Insp. Randy Liverpool, of the Western Division, thanked members of the public for keeping Police informed of sightings.

A Police spokeswoman said yesterday: "A 30-year-old Paget man was arrested in the early morning hours today in connection with the incident on Wednesday, in which a two-year-old child was removed from her grandmother's house by her machete-wielding father.

"The man was arrested by Police near his Paget residence after a short chase.

He is being detained at Somerset Police station.

"A Plea Court appearance is expected next week.''
