Police bike in City crash
Street.
A Police motorbike was responding to a call around 10.30 a.m. when it nicked one car, ricocheted off another and slammed into the back of a parked car along Church Street yesterday morning.
Teresa Soares was driving on Church Street when four Police vehicles flew past with flashing lights and screaming sirens.
P.c. Frederick Smith, riding the Police motorbike that crashed, was responding to the same call but traffic condensed near the back of the House of Assembly when he came down Church Street after the others went by.
Mrs. Soares did not see P.c. Smith as he approached behind her.
His emergency sirens and lights failed to disperse traffic and even though he slowed down, his bike still struck a car.
P.c. Smith nicked the rear of a gray Mitsubishi Colt upon entering traffic.
Mrs. Soares turned left from the right-bound lane as P.c. Smith skipped off the grey Mitsubishi then ricocheted off her rear left door.
She said: "I thought they were all gone and I went.'' The bike fell to the ground and slide underneath a parked purple Opel Astra in front of Government offices in Global House.
One witness said he saw P.c. Smith come along Church Street from the MarketPlace.
"He was dipping and weaving,'' said the witness.
Constable Smith was on his feet after a moment and directing traffic but his limp indicated a leg injury.
He was taken to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital but later released.
"Right now it's just sore,'' he said at the accident scene.
Mrs. Soares was shaken but uninjured.
The driver of the grey Mitsubishi was also uninjured and later drove off after speaking with Police.
The Mitsubishi suffered no visible damage but the white Suburu had a dented rear left door and the purple Astra had a dented rear fender.
The Police bike's front fender was bent back and underneath itself, the headlight was shattered and indicators were bent.
After more Police arrived, P.c. Smith quietly sat on the Wesley Methodist wall while Teresa Soares sat in her car and cried.
