Policeman, was sentenced to six months in prison yesterday when he appeared in Magistrates' Court.

Carlos George Morel, who was assisted by court-appointed interpreter Mr. Peter Stevens, pleaded guilty to landing in Bermuda without the permission of the Department of Immigration and stealing a mountain bike and suitcase from Steve Millet of St. David's.

The court heard he was also wanted in his home country where he allegedly chopped off another youth's arm.

The stolen items had a total value of $700. They were all recovered. Sgt. Ken James, prosecuting, said Morel entered Millet's home and stole the mountain bike and suitcase sometime last weekend.

Police were called and Morel was later arrested in Hamilton around 11.50 p.m.

At that time he complained that he was hungry.

Morel arrived on the Island on July 2 aboard the Shell tanker Eburna . He jumped from the ship and swam ashore.

While on the Island, he slept in a car at Bernard Park.

Morel, dressed in a black T-shirt, rubbed his chin and muttered to himself as Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis sentenced him to six months in prison for the offences and said he would be recommending his deportation after Immigration authorities finished with his case.

Morel will be deported to the Dominican Republic via London.

The court heard his father was a Police lieutenant.
