Portion of Smith's Island purchased by National Trust
The Bermuda National Trust has purchased a huge slice of Smith's Island in St.
George's in an effort to preserve its unique natural environment.
The purchase of the 23-acre site, taking up the western third of the Island, has cost $850,000 with a large chunk of the cash coming from a donation by the Bank of Bermuda.
At a press conference announcing the purchase yesterday, BNT President Hugh Davidson said that the deal would save the Island from any substantial development.
And he added that the site could prove invaluable in encouraging youngsters to become interested in their environment.
"This is a tremendously significant acquisition for the Trust,'' Mr. Davidson said. "There are few such large open space areas left in Bermuda and we are very pleased to have been able to save this land with all its natural features for our children and grandchildren. Plans for the future of the property include Bermuda cedar reforestation, since already our cedar is naturally regenerating there, and educational visits along the lines of a junior conservationist campsite.'' Mr. Davidson added that the charity still needs to find an additional $200,000 to make the final payment on the property and would be working hard to raise the cash.
