Noting Bermuda Paint Company and Kempe & Whittle Ltd. had also introduced measures to help the environment, he said: "I encourage other businesses to take the lead.'' Mr. Leon (Jimmy) Williams (PLP) sent condolences to the family of Mr. Warren Mansfield Bascome.

The taxi operator who was a "quiet and active member of the PLP'' would be missed, he said.

Mr. Williams also congratulated Mr. Robert Rego for being named president of the Chamber of Commerce and Pastor Samuel Hayward, who was recently welcomed to Richard Allen AME Church.

Shadow Youth and Sport Minister Dr. Ewart Brown congratulated Mr. Freddie Evans, "the ambassador for basketball in Bermuda.'' Mr. Evans began his efforts in 1984 and was now president of the Bermuda Basketball Association. He helped the sport grow to 22 basketball teams from 12, and also ran two basketball camps for youngsters.

Mr. Tim Smith (UBP) congratulated outgoing Chamber of Commerce president Mr.

Louis Mowbray, who just completed a two-year term.

Deputy Opposition Leader Mr. Walter Roberts sent condolences to the family of Mr. Edward Sinclair (Slim) Simons, "a well-known plumber in the Somerset area'' who was also active in the PLP.

Shadow Education Minister Ms Jennifer Smith congratulated retiring teachers.

Mrs. Winnifred Nisbett worked 45 years at Southampton Glebe, Mrs. Violet Brangman 40 years at Whitney Institute, Mrs. Sheila Johnston 38 years at St.

George's Primary, Mrs. Hazel Oakley 24 years at Bermuda High School, Mrs.

Ursula Hart 39 years at Paget Primary, and Mr. Albert Richardson 23 years at Opportunity Workshop.

Ms Smith also congratulated this year's Denton Hurdle Memorial Award winners.

They were Zachary Simons of West End Primary, Patrina Swan of Purvis Primary, Stephen Woodley of Warwick Secondary, and Keisha Allen of Berkeley.

Mr. Walter Lister (PLP) congratulated those who worked to restore the Packwood Home.

He also sent condolences to the family of Mr. John Spencer (Stick Man) Galloway, a taxi operator who died recently. He was "an ambassador for Bermuda,'' he said.

Tourism Minister the Hon. C.V. (Jim) Woolridge congratulated Mr. Quinn Talbot, who took part recently in the World One Armed Golf Championships in Scotland.

He also congratulated Trinidadian Mr. Brian Lara, who set a record of 501 runs in a first-class cricket match for England. He was an inspiration and example to the youth of Bermuda.

Mr. Nelson Bascome (PLP) congratulated the Band and Corps of Drums of the Bermuda Regiment, which recently performed at the 200th anniversary of the Lincoln and Welland Regiment in St. Catharines, Ontario. The two regiments have a long association.

Health and Social Services Minister the Hon. Quinton Edness congratulated young Bermudian golfer Ms Kim Marshall, who competes for Wake Forest in the United States.

Shadow Transport Minister Mr. Dennis Lister sent condolences to the family of Mr. Damaine Patrick Simmons, 21, of Sandys, who died recently in a traffic accident. His was "another young life that has been taken away from us.'' Transport Minister the Hon. Maxwell Burgess sent condolences to the family of Mr. Malcolm Collingwood Furbert.

Mr. Burgess had served under the sportsman and successful businessman at the Bermuda Football Association.

Speaker the Hon. Ernest DeCouto congratulated the Tourism Minister, Mr.

Woolridge , on receiving the CBE recently in the Queen's Birthday Honours. It was "well deserved,'' Mr. DeCouto said.
