Probe begins into escape of sex attacker
Thursday night was due to be taken back to Casemates maximum security prison, The Royal Gazette has learned.
Brian Carlton Rogers, 32, was being held in an extra security holding room at the Ferry Reach, St. George's facility, the Prisons Commissioner confirmed.
Mr. Ed Dyer further confirmed Rogers broke out by jumping through a barred window in the room. It is understood he bent the window's bars.
"He was in an area we put people who need to be removed from the normal prison population,'' Mr. Dyer said.
"It was a barred window (he escaped through) but exactly what the condition of the window was, I do not know.'' Mr. Dyer added one part of the room was "more secure than the other'' -- Rogers being in the less secure area.
Health Minister the Hon. Quinton Edness revealed yesterday that Rogers was on his way back to Casemates Prison for "a violation''.
But he said he had obviously been considered well behaved enough to be incarcerated at the Prison Farm.
However, Police are warning: "The public should not attempt to apprehend the escapee, but sightings should be reported immediately on 911.'' Meanwhile, a former Police officer believed Rogers was "potentially very dangerous''. He pointed out Rogers had kidnapped a girlfriend and threatened to kill her. And he had been charged with masked robberies and possession of weapons.
Mr. Edness said he met with Prison officials first thing yesterday. "They are doing a complete investigation to find out just how it happened and whether there was any negligence on the part of anyone.'' Mr. Edness added: "He is going to be found. And I recommend that any relatives or friends who know where he is should report him because if they don't they are committing an offence. The longer he stays out, the worse it will be for him.'' A team of five Police and four Prison officers headed by Insp. Coglin Gibbons, are conducting an Island-wide search for Rogers.
Police spokesman P.c. Gary Venning said there had been no sightings of Rogers, who had three-to-four known addresses.
Rogers has served two years of a 10-year sentence handed down in Supreme Court in February, 1991 after he pleaded guilty to beating, sexually assaulting, and threatening the life of his girlfriend, deprivation of liberty and receiving thousands of dollars worth of stolen property.
A prosecutor told the court Rogers held his former girlfriend at knife point and, on another occasion, ordered her to lay down in a shed he was hiding in and threatened to set her on fire.
He demanded money from her several times and twice ripped her clothes off and sexually assaulted her.
Rogers had at first denied the charges for which he was jailed for 10 years.
And after being bailed he eluded the Police for two weeks before being caught.
Rogers is described as being 6'1'' tall and weighing 200 pounds. He was last seen wearing a blue sweat top and blue jeans.
Brian Rogers.
