Reefs always a hit with these honeymooners!

spent their honeymoon there in 1951. And with at least 30 visits to the distinguished South Shore resort now behind Earl and Renee, they are pretty much experts on all that it has to offer. "Everything is lovely, but the main reason we love it so much is the staff,'' explained Mrs. Spencer. "We feel very strongly about the staff. The Reefs seem to have kept the same people for years and for us, it's like going home. Sylvia, Joan, Victoria, Slippery, the concierge, everybody right on down the line -- they're all still there and when we go back we always get a big hello and a kiss.'' Speaking from her home in Winchester, Massachusetts, Mrs. Spencer said that she and her husband fell in love with the hotel from their very first visit. "We were very young and had a five day honeymoon in 1951. My husband was about to enter Harvard Business School and we only had five days for our honeymoon before he began.

So we went to the same travel agent that had served his mother and father for a number of years and they recommended a new establishment, the Reefs. "It was only about four years old at the time and we went down and loved it. We loved having the beach right there and all the staff were cordial and warm.

And we like a smaller place. Big places like the Princess are just not our style and so we've been going back ever since.'' Because they are long-time visitors to the property, said Mrs. Spencer, she and her husband have seen many changes take place over the years, especially under its present owner, Tourism Minister David Dodwell. "It's been great fun to watch it build,'' she said. "We have a number of pictures that we took when we honeymooned there in 1951 which show what it looked like at that time. So for the 50th anniversary, we gave them to David. "The time we've spent there has been fun. A lot of the same people go back at the same time every year and we have become friends and look forward to seeing them the next year so it truly is a home away from home. "We've also lived through quite a few managers over the years and there have been various types of people but it was great when David took over. His purpose was to put money into the Reefs and improve the facility rather than to just let things go. I know we appreciated it and I think it has made a big difference. We're very proud that he has become an MP. As a person, I can't imagine that he won't be doing Bermuda a tremendous amount of good. "When David bought the place, it was the beginning of a real rebuilding. The dining room was once very small and we had to sign up in advance for one of two seatings but then they built a new dining room and added to the old and it made things a lot easier. We can now eat at any time. And, it's a small point, but I like the rug that's there also. Many places have tile and this just makes everything so quiet and nice. The food of course, is wonderful. I guess they must change the chefs every once in a while but the presentation is always beautiful and the help really flies. They're really on the ball.'' The hotel's proximity to many of the activities regularly enjoyed by the Spencers on their visits to the Island is an added bonus. "We love its proximity to Port Royal Golf Course,'' she said. "We like it as much as any other course and find it as challenging as even Mid-Ocean. Also, we like the beaches on the South Shore, particularly the Reefs beach and, although I guess it's the same We just really love it! is right there. But we generally just like that end of the Island. It's nice for traffic because it's not so busy and it's close to Somerset.'' The friendliness shown towards she and her husband "I love Bermuda. I think all the people on the Island are so warm and so welcoming. It's nice to go into town and the people are always very thoughtful about tourists. That's what keeps us coming back to the Island, the warmth, the politeness, the respect that everybody has for everybody. And it's the same at the Reefs. We've been going for over 30 years, usually twice a year -- every April and every October -- and they've always been very good about remembering anniversaries and birthdays. We're going back on April 22 which is my birthday and I always feel as if they try and make it special for me.'' Mrs. Spencer said she and her husband have tried other Islands but always come back to Bermuda, and even recommend it to others. "We had a couple of years where we went to other Islands in the Caribbean but it was just too hot. And we've decided to always go back to places that we know. Bermuda is not the Caribbean and you can't always count on the weather so I definitely don't recommend that people only come to Bermuda for two or three days. But we love it.''
