Environment Minister the Hon. Clarence Terceira said the seven staff had to revaluate and assess 29,000 units, which was a "huge job''.

They had been preoccupied over the past year with computerisation of the departments, he said.

Dr. Terceira was asking the House to consider legislation entitled the Land Valuation and Tax (1994 quinquennial revaluation postponement) Order 1994, which proposes to delay rental unit revaluations to July, 1995.

Shadow Environment Minister Rev. Trevor Woolridge said the delay was an example of how Government "was penny-wise and pound foolish''.

Government's staff cutbacks were hurting in the long run, he said. The Ministry could also have looked to other departments to find extra staff to help with the revaluations, he said.

He added that he hoped seven staff was enough to complete the work by July 1, 1995.

Replying, Dr. Terceira defended Government recessionary staff cutbacks.

They were across the board, he said, and had helped the Island through the recession.
