$100 in Magistrates' Court for failing to open during permitted licensing hours.

David (Tinny) McCann, owner of Show Bizz, admitted on Monday that he failed to have his premises open on August 18.

Restaurant owners who have a restaurant liquor licence are required to be open for business between 10 a.m. and 1 a.m.

Prosecutor Insp. Peter Duffy told the court McCann had applied to change his liquor licence. But on a routine inspection by Police officers on August 18, they discovered the premises still closed at 10 a.m.

When asked why the restaurant/bar was shut, McCann replied: "I have to muster up staff to open.'' He assured the officers the premises would be ready for business within two hours.

But when the officers returned later in the morning, the restaurant was still closed.

McCann told them he was normally there at 10 a.m. and staff arrived an hour later but on that occasion he was doing paperwork and did not watch the time.

McCann told Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis that Show Bizz is closed as he is trying to sell it.

BIU FETES RETIREES AWD BIU fetes retirees The Bermuda Industrial Union will hold its first-ever reception in honour of its retirees and pensioners tomorrow, union president Mr. Ottiwell Simmons announced.

The reception and dinner, which is to be held in the BIU's Union Street headquarters at 7.00 p.m. tomorrow evening, will feature guest speaker the Rev. Larry Lowe Sr. and entertainer Mr. Sydney Bean.

Some 200 retirees and pensioners have already indicated they will be attending, Mr. Simmons said.

KIDS' BIKES STOLEN CRM Kids' bikes stolen St. George's Police are investigating a weekend break-in at a nursery school in Hamilton Parish. A playground shed was entered and three small BMX pedal cycles were stolen. Another child's pedal cycle was stolen from a house on Longford Road in Warwick on Monday night.

The turquoise and yellow cycle was removed from a porch at the front of the house.

TRUCK CATCHES FIRE FIR Truck catches fire The Bermuda Fire Service was called to a home in Smith's Parish on Monday but found the fire out upon arrival.

A pot left on a stove caused minor damage at the residence in South Breakers estates near Pink Beach, a Fire Service spokesman said.

Two vehicles and nine men were sent to the scene at about 5.30 p.m., he said.

Nobody was injured.

Also on Monday, firefighters were called to Palmetto Road in Devonshire at about 1 p.m. after fire broke out in a Corporation of Hamilton garbage truck.

That fire, caused by a hydraulic oil leak, was also out when the Fire Service arrived, the spokesman said.

CD THEFT DENIED CTS CD theft denied A 35-year-old man denied in Magistrates' Court this week stealing cassettes and compact discs from a record store last week.

Anthony McDonald Joinville was charged on October 14 with breaking into Chris Kross Records on Court Street and stealing eight compact discs and cassettes.

Their value was placed at $336.

Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis set a trial date for Joinville of March 2, 1995. He was released on $500 bail.
