Sandys group plays wait-and-see

in Sandys were last night staying tight-lipped over an olive branch from Youth and Sport Minister Tim Smith.

It was announced last week in the Queen's Speech that a youth centre for the Sandys area was on the cards.

But Mr. Smith told The Royal Gazette that no site had been identified, although various options were being examined.

Mr. Smith, however, said that he had discussed the matter with Cabinet colleagues and a more central site than the former Canadian base at Daniel's Head was favoured.

Last night, Cordell Brangman of the Sandys Action Group said the group met at the weekend to discuss the latest move.

He said: "What we decided is to wait and see before saying anything or doing anything.

"We don't know what buildings Mr. Smith might be talking about -- he has talked about a place which is centrally located in Sandys.

"We have looked at all the buildings around Somerset they could be talking about.

"If what was offered was suitable we would have to sit down and talk about it -- but everything has to go back to the committee.'' But Mr. Brangman added that the Sandys Action Group had submitted its own plans for the site to Government -- but claimed Ministers had not allowed it to be presented.

And he said: "It's not just a youth centre -- we are looking at the whole development of the Daniel's Head site as an area where everyone will get the chance to use it.'' The Action Group met after the Bermuda Land Development Company announced no-one had bid successfully for the Daniel's Head land.

The sole bid, by an overseas investor, was rejected because it proposed too much housing and did not comply with the brief for the area.

BLDC chairman Vincent Ingham said the future of the old base would now be reviewed with various groups and committees taking part in the process.
