"You're a murderer,'' say the students of St. David's Primary.

They are mourning the theft of all five eggs from a nest near their school. It is believed a vandal snatched them.

The loss was discovered when children went to check the nest, the only one in a trail of nine that attracted the birds this year.

Five-year-old Ashley Hawkins burst into tears when she found it was empty.

Then hurt turned to anger, as the kids decided to put their feelings into words.

They have delivered a bundle of moving letters to The Royal Gazette , condemning the attack on rare Bermudian creatures they have learned to love and protect.

"Someone came to one of our boxes and murdered five baby bluebird eggs,'' wrote Cal-Anne Curtis.

"Whoever murdered them please confess,'' pleaded Roger Pitcher.

"I am very disgusted and disappointed,'' declared Larea Denbrook.

"LEAVE OUR BLUEBIRDS ALONE.'' Mr. Eddie Wright, the school's head teacher, said the bluebird trail was started more than 20 years ago.

Students taught to cherish the bluebird were now sending their children to the school.

"The nest was made before Easter, and over the Easter holidays the eggs started to appear.

"By the end of last week there was a full complement of five eggs.

"The whole school had seen them, and got quite excited about it.

"On Monday my little primary one group went out to check the eggs. The first kid who went up looked in, and when she saw there were no eggs she just cried.'' Mr. Wright said a rat could not have climbed the metal pole on which the nest stood.

"You get these isolated incidents of cruel vandalism, and the kids just can't understand it. It has really shocked everybody.'' TEARFUL -- Children of St. David's Primary are grieving over the loss of five bluebird eggs from a calabash nesting box.
