Scott to resign from BUT
Veteran Bermuda Union of Teachers general secretary Milton Scott last night confirmed his resignation.
Speaking to a small group of teachers at a general membership meeting at CedarBridge Academy's cafeteria, Sen. Scott -- who is also Minister without Portfolio under the new Progressive Labour Party Government -- announced that he will resign on December 23.
Shortly after the General Election, the Government Senate Leader, who has held the union post for some ten years, told The Royal Gazette there would be no conflict of interest between his role with the union and his political position since he was unlikely to have a role as Education Minister.
However, during a recent meeting in the Upper House, Sen. Scott hinted that he was considering quitting the union.
He then refused to elaborate on his comments.
When contacted last night, he said: "I don't have any comment until I make an official press release.'' But BUT president Michael Charles said Sen. Scott will be missed.
"He has given invaluable service to the union and he will be missed,'' Mr.
Charles said. "His knowledge of labour laws, the Trade Union Act has helped us a lot. The working conditions for teachers have definitely improved during his time with the BUT.'' He added that the BUT's executive committee had petitioned the Education Ministry on his behalf for leave from teaching at Paget Primary to act as the general secretary.
"When that comes through I will have to relinquish my position as president,'' he noted. "I guess (BUT executive member) Anthony Wolffe will act in that post until our AGM in February.'' HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY HOA
