Senators to debate telecom rules

The Upper House is to get to grips with an Act aimed at shaking up local telecom legislation and to avoid further legal battles for Government as it introduces more competition into the sector.

When the Telecommunications Amendment Act passed the House of Assembly last month, Minister Renee Webb said the new law would correct deficiencies, tighten loopholes and lead to lower costs and easier competition.

Also on the agenda for today is an amendment to the tax laws covering visitors to the Island.

The House of Assembly passed a law last month aimed at making tax collection easier and simpler.

Finance Minister Eugene Cox told the House of Assembly that the amendment would combine several pieces of legislation in one and give the Tax Commissioner direct responsibility for the taxes.

Opposition MPs said the drive towards cruise-fly holidays could mean people being taxed twice -- by ship and by aircraft.

Senators will also debate an Act designed to allow for the mortgages on aircraft and aircraft engines to be held in Bermuda.

It was said in the House the new Act complements the booming Bermuda Registry of Aircraft and would make the Island more attractive to airlines considering basing their fleet's registrations in Bermuda.
