Planning permission has been sought for the renovation of the original sewage treatment works on Corregidor Avenue and its completion will signal the real start of the regeneration of the former US Naval air station.

It is anticipated work will start later this year to construct the hi-tech, fully-enclosed tertiary unit, which will produce treated waste three times cleaner than existing Bermuda plants.

A local contractor will complete the plant, which BLDC officials say is one of the most important infrastructure projects to benefit both business and residential tenants at the 420-acre site.

And as it comes on-line, construction work will also be taking place on three bedroom houses on the base.

BLDC spokesman Don Grearson said it would take up to two years to complete the conversion of the 54 homes.

The homes will then be sold on long leases to Bermudians, provided legislation is changed iun November.
