Dr. Brown slammed Government for treating the Island's 1992 Olympic athletes shabbily. He said the athletes would be honoured by Government at a function next month. But this would be well over a year after the Barcelona Olympics.

However, president of the Bermuda Olympic Committee Mr. Austin Woods lashed back. He said the VIP December 14 event at Camden was being laid on by his committee -- not Government.

And it was not being organised primarily to honour Bermuda's athletes, although this would be done. It was designed to draw attention to the Olympic Truce, an ancient tradition, said Mr. Woods.

The idea was for warring nations to put down their weapons during the Olympic Games.

Mr. Woods said there had been problems in honouring Olympic 1992 athletes sooner. "Most live outside Bermuda,'' he added, referring in particular to those who took part in equestrian events.
