A total of 86 emergency assistance calls were received, seven less than in November, 1992.

Of last month's total, 68 were because of fire and the rest were for special services, including two road traffic accidents and a fuel spill in Flatts Harbour.

The traffic accidents were among the most significant calls received last month, the Fire Services said.

In both accidents people were trapped in the vehicles and had to be freed using the Holmatro rescue equipment.

Monetary damage estimates for the two vehicles totalled $20,000, almost half of the total ($49,267) estimated financial loss recorded last month.

The Fire Services were also called out in a rescue of a yacht that ran aground off Chub Beacon, but the yacht managed to get into Robinson's Marina before sinking.

Light portable pumps and submersible pumps were used to refloat the yacht.
