Soares looks forward to his big `challenge' as Health Minister
The Hon. Harry Soares was sworn in as Health Minister yesterday -- and immediately declared: "This is the biggest challenge of my life.'' Mr. Soares said one of his first tasks would be to meet Prisons Commissioner Mr. Edward Dyer.
Westgate prison was hit by industrial action over alleged under-staffing while he was off the Island.
But Mr. Soares said he had been briefed by new Premier the Hon. David Saul.
"Obviously there was an incident regarding the prison,'' said the former Government backbencher.
"I have a great interest in the prisons, and I will definitely be seeing Mr.
Dyer.'' One area which would be looked at was funding for Westgate following complaints more prison officers were needed.
But Mr. Soares made no promises, pointing out most Government departments could make a case for more funding.
"There appears to be a real shortage in the number of way in which we can raise money.'' Former Youth and Sport Minister Mr. Soares was speaking after being sworn in at Government House.
The ceremony was attended by Governor Lord Waddington, Dr. Saul and several of Mr. Soares' colleagues, including Technology Minister the Hon. John Barritt, Works and Engineering Minister the Hon. Leonard Gibbons and Environment Minister the Hon. Tim Smith.
Dr. Saul said he had no doubt Mr. Soares would make a success of his portfolio, capitalising on his four-year experience as chairman of the Hospitals Board.
He also doffed his hat to Mr. Soares' wife, Wendy.
"I thank Mrs. Soares for her sacrifice. All spouses have my undying devotion.
The Country is in her debt.'' Mr. Soares said he was excited by the challenge ahead, adding: "I am really looking forward to it.'' He spoke of a new "vibrancy'' in Government since Dr. Saul had become Premier.
"I feel there is a vitality. It is immensely exciting.'' Mr. Soares, who said he would be a full-time Minister "if necessary'', hinted at ways he would handle his portfolio.
For instance, he pledged to work closely with the Education Ministry in the battle against drugs and crime -- a number one priority in the new administration.
"The Premier has given the Country an undertaking that we will act on this with great determination.
"One thing I am very concerned about his rehabilitation, and I believe in education and training before someone gets in trouble. I am extremely keen on both of these.'' Mr. Soares added: "We have to find ways to stop repeat offenders.'' HANDS-ON APPROACH -- New Health Minister the Hon. Harry Soares at yesterday's swearing-in ceremony at Government House.
