Social report ordered for 16-year-old thief
him more than $800 in stolen goods, including a blue emergency light from a Police car.
The St. George's youth admitted the offences in Magistrates' Court yesterday.
Prosecutor Sgt. Donald Grant told the court an officer parked a Police car outside a home on Barrack Close in St. George's on April 1.
He stayed there one hour. When he returned, the light, valued at $180, was missing. Six weeks later he found the light on his doorstep, destroyed beyond repair.
On May 21, the youth broke into the St. George's Dinghy and Sports Club with several other youths.
They entered through the roof and stole a half carton of cigarettes and several bottles of liquor valued at $371.
On April 30 he broke into the Royal Artillery Association club in St. George's with another youth and stole 11 bottles of liquor after they gained entry by smashing the glass in the men's bathroom.
The damaged glass cost $30 to fix. None of the goods were returned.
When arrested, the 16-year-old admitted the offences and said: "It was a stupid thing.'' Yesterday he told Magistrate the Wor. Cheryl Ann Mapp he had a problem with alcoholism and had been attending Addiction Services.
He said he had been a student at the Berkeley Institute but had dropped out because he didn't like it.
"Getting an education is something you should learn to tolerate,'' Mrs. Mapp said. "It will hopefully keep you from being in this court.'' The Magistrate released him on $500 bail and one surety. He will appear to be sentenced on July 17.
A second 16-year-old St. George's youth also admitted stealing 11 bottles of liquor worth $295 from the Royal Artillery Association.
Sgt. Grant said when arrested, the 16-year-old admitted breaking into the RAA with two others. One stood as lookout while the other two went inside.
Magistrate the Wor. Cheryl Ann Mapp noting the youth was already serving eighteen months' probation, asked for his file to be updated and released him on $500 bail plus one surety.
He will appear again on June 27 for sentence.
