Each year, following Easter, the Shelter and local veterinary clinics are often faced with unwanted and often injured chicks and rabbits, said SPCA President Joanne MacPhee.

While suitable for responsible and pre-informed owners, these young animals do not make good gifts, especially for young children. Frequently they become the victims of unintentional neglect and cruelty, especially when insufficient attention is given to their special feeding, care, and temperature control needs.

Small children inadvertantly break bones and cause other fatal injuries. They also fall victim to neighbourhood cats and dogs.

Ms MacPhee added that many people have contracted salmonella from these animals.

The Society instead recommends that cute and cuddly stuffed animals be given.
