St. George's residents are planning a mini fair to help fight the battle against drug abuse.

The Mini Fair on Drugs and Alcohol Abuse Awareness -- to be held on Saturday at Penno's Wharf -- will attempt to bring the whole St. George's community together to raise awareness of the drug problem.

A committee of concerned St. George's residents have also organised the event as part of The Council Partners' fundraising campaign.

Committee spokesperson Ms Dominique Smith said: "Each parish is identifying ways in which its residents can contribute to the war against drugs. These events don't have to involve financial commitments''.

"We've found just the right balance between education and entertainment,'' she added.

At the fair, there will be presentations by PRIDE and Youth to Youth about their anti-drugs programmes. Some local recovering addicts will also discuss the personal struggles they had to endure to overcome their addiction.

The St. George's parish constable will also be on hand to meet the residents.

And there will be performances by jazz, reggae, gospel and oldie goldie bands.

There will also be face painting for children.

Admission to the fair is free. It will be officially opened by the Mayor of St. George's the Wor. Henry Hayward at noon and will run until 5 p.m.
