yesterday honoured his memory and his son, who was called to the Bar.

Mr. Michael Stubbs, 29, became the most recent member of the Bermuda Bar Association following a tree planting ceremony in memory of his late father.

A certified member of the Honorary Society of Gray's Inn, Mr. Stubbs was presented to the Bar by Mr. Julian Hall, on behalf of Hall & Associates.

Mr. Hall described him in glowing terms as a lawyer "particularly adept at applying both honey and vinegar'' within his profession.

"When he worked for me it was clear at a very early age he had a very good grasp of the law and a very good instinct for it,'' Mr. Hall said. "We all need to encourage him in this direction.'' Mr. Stubbs, 29, is currently studying law at New York University to become a member of the New York Bar. He has no immediate plans to return to Bermuda.

In his speech yesterday, he thanked his mother, Mrs. Marion Stubbs, stepmother, grandmother, brothers and sisters and in particular his late father for their support.

"Thank you especially to my father -- his presence is sorely missed,'' he said.

Puisne Judge the Hon. Mr. Justice Ground accepted Mr. Stubbs' application to join the Bar and commissioner for taking of oaths.

And he commended his decision to practise law abroad before returning to the Island.

"There is wisdom in getting experience in overseas metropolitan jurisdictions,'' he said. "I hope to see you in the courts here in the future.

"No doubt had your father been here today, he would have been proud of you.'' Mr. John Cooper, President of the Bermuda Bar Association, Mr. Melvin Douglas for the Attorney General's Chambers, Mr. Lawrence Scott and Mr. Michael Scott for Scott and Scott welcomed Mr. Stubbs to the Bar.

Mr. Stubbs said he was touched by all the support.

"They were very kind,'' he said. "But they have been like that all along. It is very comforting to know there are people here who are really concerned and interested to know I'm doing well.''
