sentence in Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Charles Llewellyn Nesbitt of no fixed abode, was reported to be carrying a 12-inch knife on the evening of 27 June on Church Street.

When approached by Police he said he was carrying it for self defence.

Sgt. Peter Giles, prosecuting, asked the court to consider Nesbitt's past violent history.

"In view of his past history,'' Giles said, "I would like to see a sentence that has a deterrent effect. We cannot allow members of the public to arm themselves in public.'' Acting Senior Magistrate the Wor. John Judge cautioned Nesbitt that he must do as he is directed by his doctors at St. Brendan's Hospital.

"You are to take all your medica tion, and do whatever you are directed to do by the hospital. If you do not you will be brought before me. You must learn that you cannot carry offensive weapons in public.''said Mr. Judge.
