The caution came after children found a military flare on the beach at Bailey's Bay on Sunday and a member of the public took it to St. George's Police Station.
A Police spokeswoman said the MK 25 US Navy submarine marking flare was considered dangerous since it contained phosphorus which could cause it to burst into flames if it was not transported properly.
The Emergency Ordnance Disposal Team took the flare to its headquarters and disposed of it, she added. Anyone finding such devices should call Police immediately.
