Teaching jobs attract more than 120 applicants

And head of the Island's first senior secondary school, Ernest Payette, told The Royal Gazette he saw this as a positive sign.

He said the list of applicants was made up of current teachers, people in the community who were not teachers, and overseas teachers including some Bermudians looking to return home.

But Mr. Payette pointed out that the teachers could not be selected until appointments to the top teaching posts were made.

Those appointments -- which were stalled by a dispute between the Education Department and Bermuda Union of Teachers over the department's hiring practices -- are expected to take place at the end of this month.

Mr. Payette said the Public Service Commission was interviewing six or seven people, including three recommended by the CedarBridge Academy board of governors.

"They are all very capable people and can manage what needs to be done,'' he said about the candidates. "But because it is so new to them, they will also have to learn along the way. None of them have been involved in a senior school, but they are all very capable educators.'' FASHION IN SPOTLIGHT AT SCHOOL ED Fashion in spotlight at school Some of the Island's best up and coming models will strut their stuff at a fashion show tomorrow evening.
