Tenders issued for Southside houses
last week.
The Bermuda Land Development Company said there will be two contracts, each for the renovation of five of the three-bedroom homes in St. David's.
Contractors are invited to submit bids for the work which kicks off the development of a total of 54 cottages.
Proposed work includes interior and exterior refurbishment, electrical and plumbing improvements, tiling and painting.
Contractors will also be required to install BLDC-supplied kitchen cabinetry, bathroom fixtures and fittings and windows and doors.
In supplying the materials directly, the company says it hopes to extend the contracting opportunities to small construction companies who might otherwise not be able to afford the up-front material costs.
A separate contract will take care of fitting the cottages with Bermuda-style roofing.
The first ten units are to be ready for occupancy at the beginning of of 1999 and eventually thee Southside housing programme will provide home ownership opportunities for 54 families.
The BLDC's intention to sell the leasehold interest in the cottages was announced in August. BLDC chief executive Carl Musson said the sale was "the most meaningful way for the BLDC to make a positive difference in today's limited housing market''.
