One of the Pink Ladies' biggest fund raisers is housed in a building not much larger than its name.

The Barn, located opposite St. Brendan's Hospital on Hermitage Road, Devonshire, raked in $45,000 in 1985.

And last year sales from the thrift shop, which sells everything from microwaves to shoes, almost doubled.

But this should come as no surprise to those who have visited the Barn.

Stocked with donated new and slightly-used goods -- all in good condition, The Barn offers men's, women's and children's clothing, household goods, books, records, and an assortment of other items at rock-bottom prices.

Most of the ticket prices range from 50 cents to $10.

And The Barn's chairman Mrs. Paula Rech said these bargains do not go unnoticed by the public.

"Just come by on a Saturday morning,'' she said. "As soon as the security guard opens one side of the (double door), a crowd of anxious people rush through.'' But Mrs. Rech and the WHA are not complaining, for every penny that is earned goes towards improving existing hospital facilities.

However, more volunteers are needed at The Barn on Saturdays to assist customers, Mrs. Rech said.

"We have shifts from 8.30 to 11 a.m. and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.,'' she said. "We really need more people for that last shift.

"Even if someone can only work one Saturday a month or can be available on call that would help. It is crucial for sales.'' In order to help out at The Barn, one must be a Pink Lady, she added.

The Barn, which was first opened in 1964 on the Tucker Estate on South Shore, Paget and moved to its present location in September, 1986, is open for business each Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

New and slightly used items in good condition are accepted at the store weekdays from 10 a.m. to noon.

Mrs. Rech and other volunteers like Mrs. Carol Harper and Mrs. Mary Baldwin can also be found at the thrift shop during this time, sorting through numerous boxes and bags of donated goods.
