Soon after the 17-year-old was rushed to hospital by ambulance, the crowd took to the streets and clashed with Police.

The Royal Gazette understands a long-standing feud could have sparked both incidents.

The girl told Police she was jumped by about eight attackers, male and female, on Serpentine Road.

The attack, at about 10 p.m. on Monday, left her with wounds to her face and neck.

Then, around 1.40 a.m., Police were called to Beacon Hill Road and Broome Street, Somerset, where a large crowd had gathered.

Five men and a woman, aged from 18 and 26, were arrested over two hours for public order offences. They were taken into custody.

Police yesterday would only say the two incidents appeared to be related.

Spokesman P.c. Gary Venning said gang violence was not thought to be behind the unrest.

He added: "The cause of the two disturbances is under investigation, but there is reason to believe the two incidents may be connected.''
