Health and Social Services Minister the Hon. Quinton Edness sent "very unusual'' congratulations to the taxi driver mentioned yesterday in a letter to the Editor of The Royal Gazette .

The woman driver, who may be named Dennis and has the taxi number 1171 , should come forward, Mr. Edness said.

Visitors were distressed about getting to the Airport on time when another form of transportation let them down, Mr. Edness noted. The driver not only got them to the Airport, but instructed them on the most efficient way to check in, informed them of alternate flights, apologised profusely for the failure of the other driver, and refused to take a tip.

"That's the old Bermudian way,'' Mr. Edness said. "That's what made this country. It's nice to see that that kind of thing still goes on.'' MPs also heaped praise yesterday on the man who built Lindo's Market, which was described as a Bermuda landmark.

Mr. Harry Joseph Lindo died recently.

Community, Culture and Information Minister the Hon. Leonard Gibbons spoke first in expressing condolences to Mr. Lindo's wife Marion and his family.

He noted Mr. Lindo started work at a young age and is "an example of what industry and hard work can produce.'' He began with a slaughterhouse, built it up to a butcher shop, then opened a small grocery store which grew to become Lindo's Market, Mr. Gibbons said.

Several others asked to be associated with Mr. Gibbons' remarks, including Deputy Speaker Mr. Ernest DeCouto , who grew up with Mr. Lindo and was the best man at his wedding.

Condolences were also expressed to the family of the late Mrs. Patricia Benbow of Middle Road in Devonshire. Finance Minister the Hon. David Saul said she was a first-class teacher and equestrian who died after a long battle with cancer.

Dr. Saul also sent condolences to the families of Mrs. Frederica Lindley and Mrs. Madron Amabel Jones, also from Devonshire.

Mr. Ottiwell Simmons MP (Progressive Labour Party) expressed condolences to the surviving parents of Mr. Wayne (Chico) Richardson, who died recently in only his 39th year.

Mr. Simmons also noted the very sudden death of Mrs. Edna York, the aunt of Opposition Leader Mr. Frederick Wade. She was "a wonderful person,'' Mr.

Simmons said.

The Corporation of Hamilton received congratulations on its 200th anniversary from Premier the Hon. Sir John Swan . A major city is "the heartbeat of the country,'' said Sir John, who said he was uplifted to stand on the steps of City Hall on Tuesday and see the mosaic of people watching the official ceremony.

Mr. Gibbons praised Hamilton as a cultural centre, noting the City Hall theatre, the National Gallery, and the Bermuda Society of Arts Gallery were all found within the "magnificent edifice'' of City Hall.

The Hon. Sidney Stallard MP congratulated Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Smith of Emily's Bay Lane, who just celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary.

Opposition Whip Mr. Stanley Lowe congratulated Rev. Michael Davis, who on Tuesday was installed as the parish priest in charge of St. Anne's Church in Southampton.

Mr. Lowe also congratulated Ms Kim Campbell, recently chosen to succeed Mr.

Brian Mulroney as Prime Minister of Canada. It is another step forward for feminism, as she is the first woman to lead Canada, Mr. Lowe said.

Shadow Community Affairs Minister Mr. Reginald Burrows sent congratulations to his leader, Mr. Wade, who celebrated a birthday on Monday.
