Police yesterday said the Attorney General decided to caution Jones instead.

Jones was arrested last Wednesday at the Civil Air terminal after he allegedly brought in a .22 calibre handgun and 14 rounds of ammunition.

The handgun is described as a silver and black handled .22 calibre weapon which was found in his luggage.

Police spokesman P.c. Gary Venning said that the gun would be returned to Jones once he left the Island this afternoon for Florida.

When he arrived at the Airport, Jones informed Customs officers and Police that he may be carrying a gun. He told them his luggage had been packed by someone else.

Jones, the International Boxing Federation middleweight champion, arrived on a flight from Atlanta.

He came to Bermuda after successfully defending his title against challenger Thomas Tate in Las Vegas.

Over the weekend he was involved in coaching a team of five boxers from the United States Navy.

The Navy team is training for a competition scheduled for July 17 in St.

George's.

Thomas Raspondek, who like Jones is also from Pensacola, Florida is helping to coordinate the tournament.

He said that Jones put the boxers through a intense hour and a half training session last Friday which was followed by a question period and then a photo opportunity.

On Saturday each of the boxers competing in next month's tournament won their bouts in a warm-up competition at the US Navy base.

In July, boxers from the St. George's and St. David's cricket clubs will provide the opposition for the Navy.

Jones rose to prominence during the 1988 summer Olympics in Seoul, Korea.

During those games he had to settle for a silver medal after he lost a controversial decision.

Despite the loss he won the Val Barker trophy for outstanding boxer.
