US Consul General Robert Farmer will be discussing his future shortly with newly re-elected President Bill Clinton.

"I expect we will meet before the end of the year,'' Mr. Farmer told The Royal Gazette .

Mr. Farmer said he would be happy to stay in Bermuda -- if President Clinton asked him to do so.

"I would be happy to serve wherever he thinks I may be most useful.'' President Clinton comfortably defeated Republican hopeful Bob Dole in the US presidential election last Tuesday.

The election has thrown into doubt the future of America's ambassadors.

Mr. Farmer, who was appointed by Clinton, said: "Members of the Diplomatic Corps have been contacted by the State Department to ascertain their interests in continuing to serve, returning home or being reassigned to another post.

"The State Department has informed the ambassadorial corps and political appointees that letters of resignation will not be requested of present appointees.'' He added: "I love Bermuda. I think it's very interesting to serve here. I would enjoy very much to stay here.'' Mr. Farmer, a former campaign fundraiser for Clinton, moved into the Consul's official residence Chelston in Paget two years ago.

Of Clinton's re-election, he said: "The American people have made their judgment. It would be inappropriate for me to comment further.'' Robert Farmer
