An observant visitor helped Police nab a drug user in the city.

Magistrates' Court yesterday heard that Daniel Rahayel was standing near the Flag Pole on Front Street during Harbour Nights on June 10 when a visitor saw him put drugs into his pocket.

The visitor told a Police officer about what he had seen and 18-year-old Rahayel, of Sound View Drive, Sandys Parish was searched.

A clear plastic wrap containing .63 grams of cannabis was found in one of Rahayel's pockets.

He was taken to Hamilton Police Station where he made a voluntary statement in which he said he had paid $10 for the cannabis and intended to smoke it when he left "town''.

Acting Senior Magistrate Edward King, before fining Rahayel $200, said: "That is a good tourist, the kind we want to see in Bermuda.'' SMITH'S PARISH MAN REMANDED IN CUSTODY CTS Smith's Parish man remanded in custody Senior Magistrate Will Francis ordered a 25-year-old Smith's Parish man to be remanded in custody pending sentencing in the Supreme Court for a string of offences involving visitors.

A remorseful Kevin David Shiell pleaded guilty to nine charges relating to a one-man crime spree in Smith's and Devonshire parishes.

Shiell, of Somersall Road, admitted to Mr. Francis he committed the crimes -- including assaulting and threatening to kill a visitor -- to support a drug habit.

Mr. Francis heard that shortly after 9 p.m. on July 15, Shiell rode alongside Nancy Keaton and snatched her handbag from her waist.

Shiell caused the woman to lose control of her livery cycle and collide with a wall, suffering cuts and bruises. He told her he would kill her if she resisted.

With Shiell's assistance Police were able to recover $9,090 in jewellery, although $650 in cash was not recovered.

Shiell also admitted snatching a handbag from a visitor on a livery cycle near the fifth green of the Mid-Ocean Club golf course at 11.20 p.m. on June 10.

A total of $830 in valuables, including $130 in cash was not recovered.

Shiell also admitted to stealing $40 in cash from Pink Beach Cottage Colony in Tucker's Town, Smith's on June 11 and $200 from the Shell Gas Station in Flatts, Devonshire on July 24.

He further admitted to stealing a handbag containing $669 in cash and valuables from golfer Marie McCarran near the number 12 hole of the Mid-Ocean Club shortly after 4 p.m. on July 9.

SANDYS MAN AWATIS SENTENCING CTS Sandys man awaits sentencing A Sandys man will have to wait on remand in prison for another month before he will be sentenced in the Supreme Court.

Tyrone Howard Berkeley, of Railway Trail, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to breaking and entering at a Scott's Hill Road, Sandys, home in April.

Berkeley, 33, also pleaded guilty to escaping from Police custody on the same date.

Berkeley's lawyer Mark Pettingill asked Chief Justice Austin Ward to adjourn sentencing while he tries to have another matter considered at the next appearance.

The defendant is due to be tried in Magistrates' Court on November 18 for receiving stolen property.

MAN FINED FOR OBSTRUCTING POLICE OFFICER CTS Man fined for obstructing Police officer A 35-year-old Pembroke man was yesterday fined $350 for obstructing a Police officer.

George Michaels, of North Street, pleaded guilty to the offence in Magistrates' Court.

Crown counsel Charmaine Outerbridge Smith said Police officers stopped Michaels for a drug search as he was leaving the playground on Court Street on July 10 shortly after 5 p.m.

During the search, Michaels took something out of a pants pocket and tossed it away.

When asked by officers what he had thrown, Michaels said: "I had a bag of weed, but I didn't want to get arrested.'' HOMELESS MAN GOES TO PRISON CTS Homeless man goes to prison A homeless man, who was convicted of trespassing four times in six weeks, received a prison term yesterday.

Milton Eve, 49, admitted in Magistrates' Court to trespassing on the Mid Ocean Golf Course on July 15 and August 3.

On both occasions Eve was caught in a wooden structure near the 11th tee.

He told the court that he had been living there for quite some time.

Acting Senior Magistrate Edward King sentenced him to 14 days on each count and activated a three-month prison sentence which had been suspended for two years during Eve's last court appearance on July 8.

Mr. King also noted that Eve had appeared before Senior Magistrate Will Francis on June 25 for trespassing on the same property.
