Only rustic camping has been offered on the island since Hurricane Emily caused considerable damage there in 1987, Youth and Sport director Mr. Brenton Roberts said yesterday.

The sleeping quarters were repaired some time ago, but the lack of kitchen facilities had prevented group camping, Mr. Roberts said.

He said the Ministry spent about $12,000 on the kitchen area, and a large new gas grill is available to campers who book through the Ministry.

"The restoration of the kitchen facilities will allow camping groups, whether they might be rustic or more formal, to go and use White's Island.'' The main building can accommodate up to 30 people and another 20 may camp in tents outside. On White's Island, the Ministry prefers camping groups no smaller than ten.

As well as camping, the island could be used for conferences, especially in the fall and winter. The return of dances on White's Island is another possibility, Mr. Roberts said.

Youth and Sport Minister the Hon. Pamela Gordon is to officially reopen the campground at 4 p.m. today.
