Woman jailed for stealing $90,000
serving a nine-month prison sentence yesterday.
Cheyanne Marie Tucker, of Claytown, Hamilton Parish, was silent as Chief Justice Austin Ward read out in the Supreme Court her sentence which is to include counselling for her cocaine habit.
Tucker, 32, was arrested in 1997 on suspicion of making numerous unauthorised transactions from her grandparents', Vera and Magnus Pitcher, Bank of Bermuda savings account.
Immediately after her arrest, Tucker admitted to the charges of stealing $91,000 over a period of eight months.
She said she stole the money to support her drug habit.
Mr. Justice Ward took Tucker's cooperation into account when deciding her sentence.
Defence counsel Phillip Perinchief presented two character witnesses in her support and reminded the Mr. Justice Ward that Tucker looked after two children and that her grandmother has forgiven her for what she did.
However, Mr. Justice Ward said since the Bank of Bermuda had reimbursed the Pitchers with more than $60,000, the real victims of this crime were the bank.
He called the matter a "grave breach of trust'' and sentenced Tucker to nine months in prison with the condition that she receive counselling to help her drug addiction.
