Roydell R. Stovell, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court yesterday to theft.

Prosecutor Sgt. Kenrick James, said the jewellery had been taken from a handbag.

A lady had left the bag in the bathroom of the First Church of God in Pembroke between 10.45 a.m and 1.50 p.m last Sunday.

"Stovell went into the church and asked to use the bathroom. While in the bathroom she saw the purse and searched it,'' said Sgt. James. "She found a gold charm bracelet, gold plated earrings, a watch and a necklace. She took the items and left.'' Sgt. James said Police patrolling Crow Lane saw Stovell wearing the items, which were reported stolen.

"They took her to the Hamilton Police Station where she admitted stealing the jewellery because she said it looked nice on her.'' Stovell said: "I have been in trouble for years. I just wanted some change.

There was no one around when I took those things. How did they know it was really me? I wasn't trying to be pokey or act like a professional thief.'' Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis adjourned the case until August 6 for a social inquiry report. Stovell was bailed in the sum of $300.
