of unruly youths showed up at the Emergency Department after a road accident in which a man suffered head injuries.

The youths were unable to gain access to the department because all except one entrance had been blocked off and is guarded at all times.

Access has also been limited to patients, their parents and two visitors. The measures were taken last November in response to "continuing violent incidents'' in the Emergency room. One incident saw two men burst in and spray a noxious chemical at doctors, Police and a seriously injured patient.

Hospital workers called Police yesterday after they were unable to calm the youths who refused to leave.

The flare-up occurred around 3 a.m.

"Due to the persistently bad behaviour of one of them, Police eventually had to arrest a 28-year-old Paget man,'' a Police spokesman said. "Shortly after this arrest the situation was cleared.'' Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident which occurred at about 2.50 a.m. on Palmetto Road near the Dock Hill roundabout in Devonshire.

Sgt. Kendrick Lewis believes the rider and his cycle were removed from the scene prior to Police arrival.

The 25-year-old Pembroke youth taken to hospital was believed to be the passenger on the bike. He was left at the scene.

A crowd of youths apparently followed him to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and became angry when denied access.
