Anti-UBP flyers are `trash', say parties

Anti-United Bermuda Party dirty tricks campaigns were yesterday trashed by party spokeswoman Pauline Richards.

And Mrs. Richards said: "We are not intimidated by this trash and neither should the Bermudian people.'' The flyers -- most carrying the imprint of "The Organisation for the Preservation of Bermudians'' -- attack Premier Pamela Gordon, her UBP candidate sister Patricia Gordon-Pamplin, Tourism Minister David Dodwell and Home Affairs and Public Safety Minister Maxwell Burgess.

But Mrs. Richards said: "It appears that some are trying to win this election for their chosen candidates at all costs.

"We want Bermudians to know that they are not alone in their distaste of this type of tactic.

"They should be wary of those who are obviously willing to throw decency, fairness and honesty out the window for the sake of victory.'' Mr. Burgess is singled out for his role in Grape Bay Ltd., currently locked in a legal battle with Government over the quashing of a bid to bring McDonald's fast food to Bermuda.

Another attacks Ms Gordon and Ms Gordon-Pamplin -- under a photograph of their labour leader father Dr. E.F. Gordon -- slamming Government's exclusion of middle managers from union rights legislation.

Mrs. Richards said: "I'm particularly concerned about the message this sends to our young people. I think that all of us need to be concerned about the type of example this sends to our young people.

"Our community is concerned, as we all should be, about the lack of respect being shown by some of our youth.'' And she vowed: "We will not stoop to this kind of trash -- and I'm asking all voters, whether they're UBP, PLP or NLP supporters, not to stoop to this kind of indecency.'' PLP spokesman Corey Butterfield yesterday distanced his party from the flyers.

He said: "I think a lot of people express their political views in very radical ways and I don't think that's a good way to communicate people's desires and it's not the way we do things.''
