A happy hour cruise to raise funds for a team hoping to participate in a martial arts tournament in South America will go ahead this evening.

Hurricane Igor forced the Bermuda Sanshou Association (BSA) to cancel the event last week.

The group plans to head to Buenos Aires, Argentina, next month for the 8th Pan American Wushu Championship. Wushu is the modern name for kung fu.

BSA president Garon Wilkinson said the cruise will be aboard the UberVida from 6.30 p.m. to 10 p.m.

His team is looking to raise as much money as possible towards the total cost of the tournament, which is $30,000.

Mr. Wilkinson said: "We are aware that we could never raise enough money through fund-raisers to fund the entire trip. These trips are always self-funded with a bit of sponsorship through private companies and individuals and these fund-raisers just help to take the edge off a bit of our expenses.

"This particular venture is very expensive because the cost to get to Buenos Aires is astronomical."

There are seven fighters representing Bermuda in the tournament. They include Sentwali Woolridge, Shannon Ford, Reyel Bowen, Jermal Woolridge, Talia Iris and Mr. Wilkinson.

Tickets for the cruise are $30. A meal and one drink are included in the cost. There will be a cash bar along with a variety of music played by DJ Silva Star.

The boat departs from Albuoy's Point.
