Autism panel is now on Saturday

The Bermuda Autism Support and Education Society's Autism Awareness Month Panel Discussion has been changed to this Saturday.

The event, which will be held at the Mount St. Agnes Auditorium from 9 a.m. to 4.30 p.m., will include a panel discussion on the latest information about Autism and information from neuroscience literature entitled 'Autism: Is it a Disorder of the Brain or a Brain Disorder' by Martha Herbert.

Autism is a neurological and developmental disorder that usually appears during the first three years of life.

The core symptoms consist of deficits, in varying degrees, in social behaviour, communications and play or preferred activities.

The cause of autism is unknown and it is estimated that about one in 150 children have some form of autism.

Attendees to this event will be invited to participate in a round table discussion, focusing on helping parents and professionals understand how to work through various treatments and Dr. Margarita Gurri will be on hand to provide practical advice to parents.

Dr. Gurri will also provide the first 50 parents at the event with a copy of her Parent Handbook and explain how to use it during the round table discussions.

In celebration of its tenth anniversary, WindReach Facilities will be available to outline the many services they offer, including their Summer Camp and Work Experience Program. Lunch will be provided for participants.
