Bank finds no trace of 'false' cheque being paid to Dr. Brown

The Bank of Bermuda has confirmed Premier Ewart Brown's bank account was not credited with the amount of cash he was implied to have received in the 'false cheques' scandal.

A copy of a cheque for $14,780 from Landmark Lisgar Construction to 'Dr. E. Brown' was found in Works and Engineering files earlier this month in what the Premier claims was an attempt to make it seem like he received kickbacks over the controversial Police-court building project in Hamilton.

Scorpio Construction boss Adlia Davy has since revealed that the cheque was in fact given to his company, meaning somebody must have doctored the copy to frame Dr. Brown.

Adding weight to this argument, Bank of Bermuda's premier banking relationship manager Stephen Caines wrote to the Premier last Thursday: "We have reviewed your accounts for the period of 1 May 2008 to 13 February 2009 and can confirm that at no period were your accounts credited for the amount of $14,780."

The Premier's Press Secretary Glenn Jones revealed this development in a press release last night.

Another allegedly false cheque was found in the Works and Engineering file suggesting Landmark Lisgar had paid $10,000 to 'D. Burgess' — with Works Minister Derrick Burgess saying that cheque had in fact been made out to Chester Management.

In his press release, Mr. Jones wrote: "This latest development lends further credibility to the likelihood that a person (or persons) altered the cheques in an effort to frame Premier Brown and Works and Engineering Minister Derrick Burgess of corruption."

He quoted Dr. Brown saying: "I imagine the goal of the culprits in this matter was to destabilise this Government or to undo the will of a vibrant democracy. With that being the case, this crime is an affront to every Bermudian. Whoever is responsible must be uncovered and brought to justice."
