To help minimise hurricane damage, there are several things that the public should do before the hurricane hits.

• Secure any objects that could be blown around such as lawn furniture, or bring them indoors.

• Stock up on bottled wanted and non-perishable food.

• Make sure to have an adequate supply of any prescription medication.

• Fill your bathtubs and buckets with water.

• Check your portable radio to make sure it's working, and stock up on batteries.

• Prepare emergency candles and matches. When using candles, keep a bucket of sand to put out small fires or smother flammable liquids. Having a fire extinguisher ready is also a good idea.

• Plug drainpipes on the roof to prevent salt water contamination if possible.

• Close shutters and blinds, or if you don't have them, apply making tape in the shape of an X on the window to prevent shattering.

• Fill your vehicles with gas and charge any electronic devices.

• Make sure to park your vehicle away from trees or the house.

• Unplug all electrical appliances.

• Fill a cooler with ice.

• Make sure to bring in pets in advance of the storm.

• If you own a boat, secure it carefully and bridle it to it's mooring. Avoid using nylon bridles as they can rub through.
