BELCO honours Oughton and Cox with new postgraduate scholarships
BELCO has introduced two $25,000 scholarships for full-time Bermudian postgraduate students.
The scholarships were named in honour of retired BELCO president and chief executive officer, Alfred Oughton and the late BELCO executive vice president Eugene Cox.
The Alfred T. Oughton Scholarship will be awarded to a qualified Bermudian studying for a postgraduate degree in business or social science.
The C. Eugene Cox Engineering Scholarship will be awarded to a qualified Bermudian studying for a postgraduate degree in any engineering field relevant to BELCO's operations.
To qualify for these scholarships applicants must be at least 17 years old and have attended school in Bermuda for at least five years. Successful candidates are guaranteed summer employment and internship opportunities with the company.
BELCO president and CEO Vincent Ingham said: "While recognising that BELCO has a natural engineering bias, the company is proud to support other areas in education by expanding its scholarship offerings. It was important to recognise Eugene Cox and Alfred Oughton as they had a great impact on many young Bermudians' careers.
"They were both keen on developing Bermudians within the organisation and it was under their leadership that the apprenticeship programme, postgraduate engineering programme and other education opportunities were introduced."
